The sculpture forms a key piece of the Emsworth Memorial Trail. The Memorial Garden was the initiative of Captain H.J. Groom RA, FRICS who settled in Emsworth after military service in WWII. In addition to the sculpture ‘Absence’ there are four waymarkers sited throughout the town with motifs at the base depicting various local industries. The waymarkers are located at:
The Quay, depicting fishing & the sea
St. Peters Square, depicting the ancient market
The A259 pedestrian subway, depicting woodworking & boat building
